Excellent writing, draws a vivid image of place. The writer brings so many layers together. The places written about are as large as the characters in some of the stories. Nice compilation of stories that feel larger than they are in size.

Even five stories in, I never found myself engaged in Holing's stories. Perhaps because they are more about place than character, the people secondary to the nature writing, which is competent but doesn't seem to drive these stories.
I found myself struggling to connect with the characters within each of the stories. I think the fact that this book is comprised of short stories both worked for and against it. Each story was a quick read, but since they were so short, I felt like they were excerpts from a novel length book. It was almost as if each story started in the middle rather than at the beginning. If the stories had been a bit longer, I think I would've enjoyed it more. I would still recommend this book though, because the stories were well told and had a very real feeling. I was surprised when I realized these stories were works of fiction, as they easily could have been true stories.
Intense Characters who's struggles, desires, and "personal demons" jump off the page. Looking forward to more works by this author and hope for a novel soon.
Being from Texas, California is really a foreign country to me. So, reading about VERY California characters was entertaining. But being a woman, the macho aspect was a little tiring. All together, though I recommend these stories. Another reason I liked reading the book is because I enjoy short stories. This writer was able to convey a lot of emotion, character insight into a compact way.
Writing style is poor. Author tries too hard to appear artistic.
Brilliant writing skills! Rarely write reviews, but when I saw the ratings here, I needed to jump in and boost up this star power. Holing manages to whip up life-changing experiences through metaphors, dialogue, and memorable characters in 15 page stories. I am awed. I am a big fan of short stories, and rarely do I like every story in a collection. Not true with this one. I loved them all.
